Hi ,

I work on Suse 10.3 on my desktop. I have bought a M-audio delta 1010LT soundcard and a creative 5.1 speaker setup. I installed the sound card and also the oss-drivers for the same ( got from www.opensound.com). When i run the test for oss driver installation as mentioned in the website, it runs fine and i can hear the sounds from all my speakers!! smile.gif However, when i try to play any other sound using Mplayer or any player, i cant hear anything. unsure.gif

I checked my yast sound configuration and found that Delta 1010 LT was not configured. When i tried to configure, i got the following error :

An error occurred during the installation of M-Audio Delta 1010LT.
The Kernel module snd-ice1712 for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by
incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.

I have also tried installing the alsa drivers for the same sound card. And here's the error i get when i try to insert modules into my kernel using "modprobe snd-ice1712 "

WARNING: Error inserting snd (/lib/modules/2.6.22.5-31-default/kernel/sound/acore/snd.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
WARNING: Error inserting snd_seq_device (/lib/modules/2.6.22.5-31-default/kernel/sound/acore/seq/snd-seq-device.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

I browsed the suse forum and found that installing "sound-preoss.tar" solves the problem, but i am unable to find it . Is there anybody out there who has this tar file and can mail me the same? Or is there any other solution to get sound playing on my 5.1 speakers using the Delta1010LT??

Just an FYI as well, always uninstall old hardware before installing new, that way there will be fewer problems

I followed the steps in the link above.. When I am trying to test the sound it gave me following error..I have installed alsa driver firmware

speaker-test -c2 -Ddefault -twav

speaker-test 1.0.16

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
WAV file(s)
Playback open error: -19,No such device
Playback open error: -22,Invalid argument
Playback open error: -22,Invalid argument
Playback open error: -22,Invalid argument
Playback open error: -22,Invalid argument
Playback open error: -22,Invalid argument
Playback open error: -22,Invalid argument
Playback open error: -22,Invalid argument
Playback open error: -22,Invalid argument

One more observation is in /etc/modprobe.d/sound only details about my old sound card are there.. its as follows..

options snd-intel8x0 enable=1 index=0
# W60f.dFYKELXRkmB:82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0

no details are there about my new sound card.

Thanks
Narayana

As near as I can determine, your card is NOT on the Linux audio incompatibility list, so it should work with Linux:
http://www.leenooks.com/page/show/Audio

I note you tried to install the OSS driver. Most distributions are setup to use the ALSA and not the OSS driver, and these earlier attempts of yours might be causing a problem. In addition, as noted, your now having two sound devices (one likely on the motherboard, and a second being a PCI card) could be causing a complication in setting up your sound.

Can you uninstall what ever OSS sound applications/drivers you attempted to get to function earlier, and focus strictly on trying to get the ALSA drivers to function? As an interim measure, you could also disable the motherboard sound (in your BIOS) on your PC.

Perhaps you could also provide more information as to your software/operating-system setup? Please provide:
a. the output of: <span style="font-family:Courier New">rpm -qa | grep oss</span>
d. the output URL provided by the two diagnostic scripts from the audio troubleshooting guide:
http://en.opensuse.org/AudioTroubleshootin...led_information

With that information, and with your having removed the older OSS failed attempts (plus having disabled (temporary) sound in your BIOS) we should have a reasonable chance of getting this new PCI card to function.

Thanks and good luck!

What I want is the URL that you did not paste. Please run the script again, and paste the URL provided by the script. That URL provides the information determined by the script, on your PC. I had thought that to be intuitively obvious, but I guess it wasn't to you (did you even read the audio troubleshooting guide??). Post the URL provided by the script. Please.

Thanks for the reply. I solved this porblem by just reinstalling the OS by disabling the on-board sound card.

Congratulations on getting your sound to work. Re-installation is definitely a sludge hammer approach, ... but if it works, whose to argue with success? Well done in getting sound to function.
