Hi there, and welcome to the forums. your card, is it wireless on wired? if you go into yast>network settings>network devices (or card, can't remember off top of my head h34r: ) then if you go under the global tab is your card listed there at all?

main question is, wired or wireless.

thanks.

Thanks for the reply. In the hardware section it shows the card as (Hewlett Packard company ethernet card)
and vendor as Nividia. But in the networking it shows as card not connected. IT IS AN ONBOARD CARD AND CONNECTED TO THE DMZ OF MY ROUTER.
Thanks again

right, ok so you are using wired. just another quick question, are you dual booting with windows, if so, does windows connect fine? this will tell us if it's linux box set up wrong, or router config etc.

anyway, things to check for in yast:
it has got your card there so this is good news to start with

if not using static ip address ensure it is set to DHCP. you may want to try (i do, as well as many others) have it set to 'traditional method with ifup' if it is currently set to user controlled with knetworkmanager. in the network card settings check the drivers you have, this will be filled out in the module name under the hardware tab - there may be a known problem with them, do a google and see what you find. you may want to try to update your drivers through yast. how are you trying to connect, are you using knetworkmanager as the program? to ensure it is not a problem with knetworkmanager (i for one had serious problems with this, so use wifi-radar for wireless, and kinternet for wired) try to see if kinternet connects you. you can also disable IPv6 in yast, as this stops many from getting a good connection. and one more thing you can do which is quick is change what it is set to start at, is it on cable connection, at boot or on hotplug? i have mine set to on cable connection and mine works fine.

if these things don't sort you out, post back and i, or someone else, will try some other things.

Ross.

Well Ross,

Though I have basic knowledge about Linux. But I am learning and I am finding it exciting. Well I have tried all what you have asked me but sadly I have failed. In the overview it says : Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device is not present. It surprises me as in the hardware information it names the card. I have downloaded a driver but do not know how to install it.

Thanks for any possible help.

hmmm that is a strange error  not heard that one before. anywho, have you updated kernel?

in a console type

uname -a

and tell us what version you are running. with that error you have i don't personally think it is a driver issue. but what file format is the driver in? is it a linux driver or a windows one? i.e. a .exe file.

that kernel error might be a bit beyond me...

anyway, lets see what kernel you are running and see if you are up to date.

Ross.

edit: do you run windows on the same machine (i.e. dual boot), if so does windows connect fine?

after a quick google and the first hit

http://suseforums.net/index.php?showtopic=39529

are you running 64bit suse, or 32bit suse?

this may take a little more work than i thought lol.

take a read through that topic and post the exact error you find in google, there should be enough there to set you on your way. if you do manage to fix it let me know, this might be handy for someone else some day

post again if you need any more help, i'll be here at some point during the day

Thanks Ross
You asked me to type uname -a at the console. Well it says : #1 SMP 2007/09/21 22:29:00 UTC x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 DNU/Linux.

My SUSE is 64 bit.

you need to copy the bit before #1 SMP....

the bit before is what tells us what kernel you are running. it should be at least 2.6.22.17.....

that is currently the lastest stable kernel SUPPORTED by novell, i think there is 2.6.25.1 out now, but not yet supported by novell.

cheers,

Ross.
