I'm curious why you say rule of thumb put cdroms as slaves of hard disks. I have never done this. I keep hard drisks with each other on the primary and then cd-roms with each other on the secondary. I have always heard/learned that the cd-roms will slow down the access speed of the hard drives. Just what I have learned.
I have been known to do this as well.
I dont think it effects it in over out put, but it has a better feel to me..
Maybe I am just crazy...

Actually, Bigshell wrote the reason I couldn't remember. If there is a cdrom drive on the same IDE channel as a hard drive, the HD will slow down to the speed of the CDrom when it is in use.

I've always grouped hard drives on one controller and optical drives on another as well. In my single OS days, I set the boot disk as master on one controller, and the optical burner as master on the other. Now that I've got multi-OS systems and multiple burners in those systems, it's less tidy, but I still put hard drives on one controller and optical drives on the other.
