some things to try:

1 ) check your network settings
2 ) check the firewall isn't blocking
3 ) can you get to the server from a browser ?

I understand having a new installation, you are "hot" to get this running. Sometimes we are a bit slow to respond. And sometimes not all of us know the answer immediately.

For example, I use the smart package manager (and not yast, which comes with opensuse) to do my updates, so this example is foreign to me.

How did you add the repos? Did you following this guide:
http://opensuse-community.org/Repositories/10.3
(don't forget to select OSS, Non-OSS, Packman, and Main Update Repository).

I confess, with Smart, if one were to add the repos, one would add:
http://download.opensuse.org/update/10.3/rpm/
but maybe YaST doesn't function that way and goes one directory higher .... I dont' know.

Sometimes you just need to try again, and maybe the server was down.

if you can get to it via your web browser, try copying the address, then, go to YaST - software repositories. click on add, then click on http. then paste the address. then click accept. see if that works

Do you go through a proxy?

And for the yast users, is YaST susceptible to hiccups with proxys? (I know smart is).
