I must be an idiot. I would like to install a different theme, but I can't figure out how to do it using the Control Center -> Appearance & Themes -> Theme Manager.

I have found a few themes at KDE-look.org, I download the *.gz files, and then unzip them. I don't know what to do after that.

Help please.

Thanks.

i believe you don't extract the theme folder. when you click apply new theme it will ask you for location, click on the .tar.gz or whatever file. should work that way. and no, not an idiot, you can't expect to know how to do something if you haven't done it before and haven't been shown can you. it's just different ways of doing things. i have certainly had my fair share of moments like these, and i'm far from an expert yet, lots of learning left yet.

I actually did try that, right at the end, pointing the theme manager to the .tar.gz file, but then the error message came up, No Theme files found. I have tried to read up on what some others here have said, on how to install themes but they are very confusing.

Is it possible to start the theme manager or even the control center as root? I recall reading in this forum, someone wrote, to open theme manager then click on Administrator, type in the root password then install the theme. I don't have the admin button when I open the theme manager. Could it be that that is what needs to be done?

no it is like thestig says and if that didn't work you might have to with some not all just depends on how they packaged it, you might have to unzip it once look for another tar,gz file and use theme manager to install that one

for the record, you can start it as root, open console (logged in as normal user this is) then type

kdesu kcontrol

enter root password.
but this is not your problem i don't think. as havoc said, looks like dependancy.

I am a Star Trek fan and found this

KDE-Look - Star Trek

I follow the instructions to install but no.joy. The theme file that is apparently supposed to be there, isn't. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

ok for starters thats just a splash screen,
if you want to install that you have to go into yast and search for moodin and install that
then go into your personal settings (desktop config) > apperance & themes > splash screen then click the add then browse to where you saved the file

And if you want the KDM Theme which is the login screen you will need to install KDM theme manager which is in the repo's as well
then go into system administratr > kdm theme manager then click on administrator mode then install new theme
