I have just installed SUSE 9.1 on a Compaq 5070 and having a problem with streaks in the display. All the screens prior to the final boot-up were fine but now can hardly read the display. I assume it has to do with video memory which I think is only 4 MB. The video card is a SIS-530. Light weight distro's that use a simple desktop work fine, PUPPY and **** SMALL LINUX for example bur SUSE and UBUNTU both have this problem.

Any Advice appreciated.

9.1 is VERY old and no longer supported is there any special reason for installing it. If you need a lightweight distribution get 10.3 but use a lighter window manager like fluxbox more here there is also info for older machines here
