Hi,
Can any one out there tell me why there is no javaws (Java Web Start) included in the default java1.5 installation with OpenSuSE 10.3?

I am confused as to why this one binary should be singled out of the java suite and plucked out. Is there some replacement of which I am unaware? Why has the javawswrapper been left in with javaws removed?

I say "again" in my subject line because I see that javaws has been in contention in the past.

Any form of enlightenment would be greatly appreciated.

First, thank you kindly for taking the time to check this out and reply.

I am running java-1_5_0-sun (1.5.0_update 15_0.1). I also wonder if the fact I am running 64 bit has an effect.

Here is a listing of the /usr/lib64/jvm/java-1.5.0/bin
<blockquote>
Eddy:/usr/share # ls /usr/lib64/jvm/java-1.5.0/bin
appletviewer java jdb jstatd pack200 tnameserv
appletviewer.bin java.bin jinfo keytool policytool unpack200
apt javac jmap kinit rmic
extcheck javadoc jps klist rmid
idlj javah jsadebugd ktab rmiregistry
jar javap jstack native2ascii serialver
jarsigner jconsole jstat orbd servertool
</blockquote>
Note the lack of 'javaws' in the listing. This is with both the java and javadev packages loaded on the machine.

Any idea who might be able to answer if this is an accidental omission or left out on purpose?

Seems you're correct just checked and for 32bit it is there.
Code:
ls /usr/lib64/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun-1.5.0_update15/jre/bin/
java******keytool**klist**orbd**** policytool**rmiregistry**tnameserv
java.bin**kinit****ktab** pack200**rmid********servertool** unpack200

ls /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun-1.5.0_update15/jre/bin/
ControlPanel******java.bin**keytool**ktab**** policytool** servertool
ControlPanel.bin**java_vm** kinit****orbd**** rmid******** tnameserv
java**************javaws****klist****pack200**rmiregistry**unpack200
Haven't really got a clue why or anything, on doing rpm -qi java we have the packager as http://bugs.opensuse.org so guess have a look there or ask. Though isn't java not 64bit sure I always installed 32bit with the 32bit java for FF. Perhaps I've helped, perhaps not, but I can at least confirm it is not where we expected it.

Edit:
I'm sure this isn't a bug report but upstream still waiting for Sun to give it to us. Either use 32bit java, have just seen something about icedtea6, still investigating tell you more but seems it doesn't work with audio yet or something. http://icedtea.classpath.org/wiki/Main_Page

OK doesn't help you, 32bit for you stumbled across this

for those web pages that require java or javaws under 64bit you can use Konqueror - I have know idea how or why but they both work for me.

You're correct something to do with using Java directly bit above my head to.

Having tried out icedtea6 it does seem to work, doesn't seem to be an rpm about though. I've not done any intensive testing but I have a lot of Java bits now in 64bit FF and seems to work. Have found the odd page that still doesn't play nice.

I suspect the OP needs javaws for a reason, about time Sun gave us the same as 32bit it's been years now.
