[size=5] :huh: I am a complete newcomer to Linux,(having been with Windows for as long as I can remember) and have managed to master/learn quite a bit in the short time, but I really need to install MyMoney. Tried doing it through "Install New Software" but nothing worked, so went onto their website and downloaded the latest version. The problem I have now is - what do I do with a .tar file to make it work?

Is there any reason you need mymoney which is not free.
If not you could get kmymoney which is free. You can get it here no need to compile it.

EDIT just saw that you meant kmymoney slow reader 2day

http://packages.opensuse-community.org/ind...ro=openSUSE_103

go here, you want the one near bottom titled kmymoney (0.9.1). left click on the install button, it will say open with yast meta packager, follow simple instructions from there. this way it's way easier to update the software and uninstall it etc.

but, regarding installing from tar in the future, first go to yast>software>software management and search for gcc and gcc-c++ and install these. then download the .tar file. right click>extract. copy the folder to any location, for instance /home/username/programs/kmymoney

then open a console window and type in

cd /home/username/programs/kmymoney
./configure
make
su
(enter root password)
make install
make clean

this should install for you. not all .tar files are the same, but this will work for most.

hope this helps.

the absolutely easiest way in the long run. especially if you are on a version other than 10.3, is to go to LABIX.ORG look for the SMART PACKAGE MANAGER install the pascal blesser (guru) not the openSuSE version, remember, choose your archetecture, 32 or 64 bit, and SuSE version. this has all the repositories channels pre-configured...these are the servers where you can get your patches and a ton of free apps, including the one you are looking for...chances are if you find a program for linux which is open source, it will be in these channels, then given time you can practice compiling tarballls which are not in the repos.

remember keep openoffice org stable AND unstable unchecked, the program will be updated via other channels and will keep you from using beta versions, also keep latest kde packages unchecked, only use the community and current channels, this will insure that you will get the updates which you will need and have been tested for compatibility and conflict situations.

you will need
* python-xml
* python-elementtree
* rpm-python
you can install these from your installation disc but the best thing to do is install smart from the SuSE installation disc, this is just to make sure you have all your dependencies taken care off before going to LABIX.ORG to install the version of smart package manager of which I speak.
