Currently running KDE, but wondering what I'd lose if I went to one of the "light-weight" desktops.

Can someone contrast and compare XFCE and WindowMaker (and others)?

shouldn't lose anything really, just that some of the apps don't use as much resources. it really depends on what you want to do & personal taste. i'd say give them a try & see what you think

You may lose a decent x-terminal app.

But you can always load one that belongs to a different DE, e.g. konsole.

XFCE3/35,000

xfce is my favorite "light" desktop. Version 4 has a find menu that seems to
work well....

It makes my laptop seem much more peppy than with either KDE or Gnome, even
though I'm a regular KDE user....

Check-em out!

Yes. Available on Packman.

I've never tried to install it, so I don't know level of effort is required.

Wouldn't some apps that are "specific" to Gnome or to KDE fail to run? ... How about konqueror? k3b? k9copy? KDE DVD Author Wizard? Gxine? Kmplayer? ... Could a more light weight Window Manager such as xfce be configured to run these, without making it heavy weight?

I confess my multimedia bias is showing.

lightweight window managers can be configured to use them, but as you say, they would no longer be lighweight
