Roughly four weeks ago I started with my first SuSE powered machine.

Some details:
SuSE 10.3
2 dual core AMD on socket1207
2GB RAM
4 Western Digital in RAID 5

In the beginning showed correctly the 2 DVD drives and also showed the external HD and the USB stick. For reasons unknown to me they are being shown anymore although the system appears to recognise them during start-up. When I edited the /etc/fstab (to put them in as if they were always present) they appeared in the GUI but selecting them resulted in a 'feature only available with HAL' message. Reinstalling HAL and DBUS did not give any relief.

I would love to kill my old "M" driven desktop but just can't, yet. Please point me into the right direction, I've been skimming all kinds of Fora, hence the trials above.

Folks I found it myself. Th esolution was a process that was not running. People having the same challenge please verify that hal and ivman are running.

Start yast2, goto system>SystemServices an dcheck the above mentioned processes, possibly also autofs. All three running, after reboot (or re-login), should give you the access that was missing.

OOps, apparently what I found was a temporary help, only. For some reason the automount does not kick in after a complete shutdown. Actually autofs does not even want to start.

So in sum I would liketo invite you to give possible solutions, again.

Thanks.
