Suse 10.3 AMD 64bit

I would like to revisit the kde4 desktop to see how things have progressed. I have upgraded many kde4 packages using the smart package manager, including kdebase4 and kdelibs4, but attempts to log into the desktop fail. The system keeps dropping me back to the log in screen. Any ideas on how I can diagnose this to see what the problem is ?

First make sure you have these repos
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/.../openSUSE_10.3/
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/.../openSUSE_10.3/

In Yast software management - repos - kde4
check for updates - apply

(You may still have an error which appeared this week, it gave the result you describe)

After confirming that the repositories in smart were as described above, I continued to update all of the kde4 packages installed in the initial release. When logging into kde4 I briefly get the kde startup window. It appears for only a second. It shows a hard drive icon but no other symbols. Then I am dropped back to the log in screen. Any ideas ?

try re-naming the ./kde4 folder to ./kde4old

try again to login to kde4

it will create a new ./kde4 folder, it will be as your very first login, so all settings will be gone.

see if that does it

After installing the newest version of kdelibs3 and its dependencies, the new kde4 sprang into life again. It looked very nice on this Suse 10.2 64bit machine. But I will wait for the new release before making serious use of kde4. Just imagine the new kde4 and firefox 3 - something to look forward to.
