Suse 10.2 AMD 64bit

The system has been working well up until now.

I am faced with frequent crashes. The kde panel stops working and konqueror disappears from the screen. Firefox is frequently crashing. Then the xserver reboots. The system does not go down but it is rendered unusable.

Recently I responded to the opensuse updater when it advised of several security updates. I think it broke my box. One especially comes to mind - something to do with a Firefox runtime ? advisory. It had many gnome dependencies from memory. Anyway my Suse 10.2 system is stuffed until I can resolve this. Has anyone come across a similar problem ?

Some information might help. Hardware, especially video card. Which DE? Are you running Compiz? Have your run Memtest to rule out a memory problem? How is the status of your Power Supply, the insides of your case dust free?

You mention random crashes with the X server going down this would tend to be related to your video drivers if none of the other hardware is at fault, so have you reinstalled them?

This problem has resolved itself. Part of the security updates involved the installation of a new kernel. Once booted into this kernel the instability was removed. The 10.2 system is now working and stable.
