Hi,I have been using SUSE for a couple years - no expert, but competent. I purchased a new NEC LCD monitor - and reset for what I thought would be a compatible monitor. Problem: no image / black screen Dual boot / 2 hard drives (XP default) I need to get back in to SUSE to change monitor setting to generic monitor I have tried reinstall / failsafe everything - black screen How can I change monitor setting before SUSE uses the monitor driver / black screen? Since I can't see anything, my 2nd hard drive is effectively dead. Suggestions welcome / Thanks, JCB |

At the Grub selection screen during the countdown type in a 3 you will see a line at the bottom of the page where it will display the "3" (no quotes) and than press enter.
This will take you to run level 3 where after login su to root and enter sax2 -r This should allow you to select the monitor. If for some reason you can not get the boot selection screen I believe you need to use the ctrl+alt+F7 during bootup. |

Since you are using 10.2 you should be able to fix things with the dvd.
Boot and choose install then repair. Or you could try boot installed system /Geoff |

Thanks for your help. Your solution - level 3 - sounds good, maybe there is something I am not doing right. I have used the all install options (several times) all roads so far lead to SUSE recognizing the 'bad' monitor driver / I am left with a black screen. I can not be the first person to have chosen a 'bad' monitor driver and seeking a back door. In failsafe I get a flashing '$' cursor, Can I do anything with it? When I get the 2 Grub lines against a black screen and type '3' 'enter' my XP boots. <_< Thoughts, JCB |

first of all what drivers do you have installed? can you failsafe and start yast? if you can, then uninstall drivers then run the sax2 -r
oops just read your last post, so you don't get a password prompt? now it is getting bizarre suse should pick up all and every monitors almost, refresh settings on the monitor itself, probably won't do a darn thing...the key would to get to yast via command line and get rid of those drivers...that I think would be the best bet..... also what geoff is saying, and I am sure you just hinted that you have already done this, but put your disc in click install, go through the process when you get to other options, click that, then click boot installed system, not repair installed system...I am sure have done this, but your posts are a bit vague to exactly which steps youve taken edit, edit edit, when you say several failures, does the message say> kernel needs to be loaded first? if it does, the rescue method works quite well..... your other drive has xp on it, or is it partitioned on the same drive as suse? disconnect the other harddrive, forget about it for the time being, set bios for just the one left, and then trouble shoot. |
