I have a few issues, some small, some bigger.
Recently installed OpenSuSE on 64bit system, a brand new computer. I had a few problems with video drivers but now everything seems to be OK with them.
But there's a strange thing about sound hardware. When I look at YaST's Device Information, under Sound it looks like it would detect the card(s) but it doesn't. Here's what the Device Information says:
Code:
20: PCI 1b.0: 0403 Audio device
**[Created at pci.286]
**UDI: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_8086_293e

Like I've said, it won't detect the cards even if it lists them. The Sound section of YaST is empty, and won't add anything close. I have tried looking for drivers, but ATI doesn't seem to have anything like that in www2.ati.com/suse/10.2/ . While GigaByte website displays this:
"Due to different Linux support condition provided by chipset vendors, please download Linux driver from chipset vendors' website or 3rd party website."
I'm not sure what kind of the soundcard it is in the 20th slot in the device report (above), the manuals never mentioned it (from the report it seems to be made by Intel). The only reference to it is a line in the Gigabyte ATI Radeon manual page that states "otherwise, select Realtek HD Audio Output", so I guess it is Realtek's Intel HD Audio. The website of theirs (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...=7525&lang=eng) gives drivers only for Windows. Any way to get the ATI one working or finding out the driver for Gigabyte Intel Realtek one?

Another issue is with programs and dependencies. Skype for Linux won't install for the following reason
Code:
Unresolved dependencies:
Installing skype-1.4.0.118-suse.i586[Local packages]
libqt4-4.2.1-18.i586[20080302-195113] provides libQtNetwork.so.4, but has another architecture.
There are no installable providers of libQtNetwork.so.4 for skype-1.4.0.118-suse.i586[Local packages]
libsigc++2-2.0.17-32.i586[20080302-195113] needed by skype-1.4.0.118-suse.i586[Local packages]
How to fix that? Looks like we have libQtNetwork.so.4 for 32bit and it's not good for the program, and we don't have libsigc++2 at all. As I can see from the repositories, libsigc++2 is there, as well as libqt, but libqt is listed as installed and it's not good for Skype. Any way to get them installed?

The last issue is a small boot one. For some reasons, even if I made 2 users during install, on boot OpenSuSE loads the first one. What should I set so it would open the login screen instead?

Thanks, waiting for a reply.

EDIT: added some additional info to the 20th slot soundcard, it was mentioned once, looks like it's Realtek's HD Audio.

Reference your sound, I recommend you work your way though the following audio troubleshooting guide for openSUSE:
http://en.opensuse.org/AudioTroubleshooting

If you get "stumped" confused at any step, please post here asking for clarification. Don't forget to install alsa-firmware (per the above guide).

To install skype, you will need to install libqt4-4.3.91-9.1

I found this by using
Code:
rpm -q --whatprovides
http://packages.opensuse-community.org/ind...ro=openSUSE_103

The problem is that I already have libQt 4, it says "Wrong architecture". Can't find LibQT for 64 though.

I found it no problem, using the search link I gave above. It would even be on the DVD.

I'm using OpenSuse 10.2, and that list is for 10.3. In the 10.2 list, it's not shown.

Wow, now that's a list! Thanks, will try it out.
Is it just me or doesn't 10.2 GRUB support USB keyboards? As I have only USB Cordless Desktop and it won't detect key strokes. So that means each time I want to do something else, I have to get some old keyboard for GRUB to load something else!

It shouldn't be like that.
Do you have USB legacy support enabled in BIOS?

Figured out that I hadn't by myself. Now it works! Will try out the ideas here now.
Wonder why don't BIOS have that enabled by default...

EDIT: Another question: Why sometimes YaST doesn't open the requested windows? At least won't show those. When that happens when you try to open the package manager, the second time you try that it says "Another process is using the package database. Package management can not be used." or something similar (Lithuanian translation ). Any way to get that fixed? The task manager (KSysGuard or how is it called) won't detect that YaST is running if it's closed and it still doesn't allow you to edit packages. That's really annoying, it gets fixed only after restart, and only until it starts doing that again...

EDIT2: Another dependency:
Code:
Unresolved dependencies:
Updating kipi-plugins-0.1.2-26.x86_64[System packages] to kipi-plugins-0.1.4-100.pm.2.x86_64[20080302-060236]
There are no installable providers of libkdcraw.so.1()(64bit) for kipi-plugins-0.1.4-100.pm.2.x86_64[20080302-060236]
