I've recently built a new quad-core Intel 6600 system. Configuration is ASUS P5K-VM MB, 2 GB mem, 320 GB SATA, NVIDIA FX 3500 graphics card, and 650W ANTEC PS.
Having had a couple of problems with my 10.2 installation on the system, I downloaded 10.3. It seemed to detect the Marvel chipset properly for th GigE network, but when I've tried to download updates from mirror sites, suddenly my IP address has changed, and it's not talking with the network. The new IP address appears to be some kind of default address. A reboot is required to re-establish communication. Each time, it seems to fail at connecting to the ftp/http site, then asked me whether I want to retry or skip. I tried loading the linux drivers on the CD provided with the motherboard, but everything locked up, I suspect they're not exactly current, but I was desperate. I've since re-installed the system (twice). Each time I start from scratch to keep a residue from contaminating the installation. Is this a driver problem, or is it a possible quad core problem, or more likely, just pilot error? Does anyone have a reasonable test I can perform to isolate the problem. |

sounds to me like the driver in the kernel is a bit dodgy. Try updating to a newer kernel (.23 or .24) from the OBS (opensuse build service) it may help, but as ever with a problem like this (ie random, weird behaviour/breakage) it's best to just google a lot. i suggest a search string like (please fill in model numbers) "marvell xxxxx+linux+ethernet issues"
