I'm setting up an openSuSE 10.2 x64 system to operate as a packet sniffer/scrubber and I have to enable Ethernet Bridging in the kernel. I have been able to find documentation for recompiling the kernel but everything I've found implicitly states that the steps assume that I am using an x86 architecture.

I am pretty comfortable on the 32 bit platform but this is my first foray into 64 bit Linux. Are the commands/steps the same? What would I have do differently (if anything)?

Also, there are 32 bit and 64 bit versions of many things on the system; how would I specify that I want to use the 32 bit version of a particular compiler or library, for example? Does it default to 64 bit?

Sorry for all of the questions.

If someone could point me towards some good x64 documentation/FAQ's, I would really appreciate it.

there is no difference between compiling 32-bit and 64-bit kernel.
