Can you check your list of "sources". Its in the Yast-> Installation Source tool.

You should have something like:
Status Refresh Name URL
Off Off Yast cd:///?devices=/dev/hdc
On On YUM http://suse.cs.utah.edu/suse/update/10.2

Or perhaps some different URL's, in order for you to be installing from the Internet, you need to have the line with the "cd:///" turned off and at least one of the remote URL's turned on.

What browser are you using? I had assumed (possibly incorrectly) that you were using either opera or firefox?

You note you installed the rpm from a terminal with no problem. Did you get any error messages?
[/b]
I'm running both Konqueror & Firefox and had no errors during installation.

So, when you bring up the Yast Control Centre window and click on "Installation Source", that's when you get that error?

Did you do the original installation from CD/DVD? If yes, can you put the CD #1 or the DVD in the thingy there and try again?

Original installation was done booting from CD1 and then a network installation.
The boot CD1 is still in the CD drive.

Thanks for your patience with me. I've been using Windows for years and feel like i'm on a crash course
for Linux all weekend with this but it feels good to be learning even if i am slow.

Nice of you to say so just I was about to say I'm now out of my depth and hopefully someone else can help you.

My only idea (and I don't know exactly what this tool is used for but I do know that it does no harm) is for you to click on the (in the Yast Control Centre) Online Update Configuration icon and just follow it through. don't bother with the registration stuff. This tool will populate your download sources I believe.

BTW, I just got the same error as you described and it was because one of the servers was not responding. Fortunately I have about 4 so it was able to continue. I have a feeling that you only have one and its not responding and therefore you can't go any further. Perhaps using this Online Update Configuration will add another and then you can carry on.

Best I can do for you. I use Linux a lot both professionally and privately but I'm not an installation guy. Just have a lot of experience with Linux.

Good Luck!

I think the download server may be offline. I'll see if i can add some mirror sites
and then take it from there.

Cheers anyway, the hunt goes on!!

The installation method you chose is a difficult one for troubleshooting. Most of us, including myself, have never installed this way. Hence solving problems that you have encountered can be harder to approach. Which is why I typically recommend not doing a network install, if it can be avoided.

Have you tried installing a 3rd party software package manager, to simplify your additional 3rd pary software installation hickups?
