I built a more "official" tutorial on how to tweak fontconfig to have sharp fonts like Windows XP's default configuration. It's basically a set of XML files with the Microsoft fonts: http://www.sharpfonts.com/
Please don't screem at me if you dislike Microsoft and its fonts

This sounds like you're not using a standard *SUSE version. Make sure you're using the default font families:
  • Sans Serif
  • Serif
  • Monospace

naaah,
fonts on your screenshots are poor quality.
So called sharp and polished font versions are both jagged, bad kerning (meaning that spaces between letters are uneven).
I don't think that what you are getting is even close to quality screen fonts.

examples:
look at letter "y" in the word "happy" (The KDE Community is happy..)
in your "sharp" example letter is jagged to the point of staircase effect
in your "polished" example letter is simply fuzzy.
I definitely prefer the effect I am getting.

bad kerning:
look at the word "codebase" (sentence ".. polishing of the KDE codebase.."
"polished" example
letter "o" is glued to letter "d"
much better in your "sharp" example

so in the end you have "polished" = fuzzy and with bad kerning
or
"sharp" effect = jagged with staircase effect

both far from real windows.
look at the picture I added:
word "codebase" (..all of the KDE codebase.. - second line from the bottom in text) letters are not "glued"
look at the letter "y" in the word "happy". Far from jagged, soft, but not to the point of fuzziness.

Now my fonts are softer than windows, but neither mine nor windows are jagged with kerning problems.

I am not talking about font type:
suse is using ttf core = Arial + Times New Roman + Bitstream Vera/Bitstream Vera Sans

I have Bryant + Garamond

So font shape is different obviously.

I am talking about staircase effect, jagged fonts, fuzziness, kerning problems (as described above). There are not related to the font one is using.

Ok, I thought from your message that you were complaining about your fonts
Well, I wouldn't stay in front of a screen like that more than 5 minutes
