a while back, before i learned how to screencast, i asked for some advice on which app to use for recording a desktop session. i don't think anyone answered my post so i abandoned the forums and went exploring on my own.
what i turned up was recordmydesktop and gtk-recordmydesktop. i downloaded these and compiled them from source but i think guru has both packages now in his repos. anyway, i saw this cool tip this morning. perhaps someone else would like to read it. Novell Cool Tip: recordmydesktop recordmydesktop is awesome software. it doesn't feel like it's resource heavy. i highly recommend the gtk-recordmydesktop for a nice simple dialog box. |

Such tools have been available for quite some time. I have been using them since SuSE 9.0.
While recordmydesktop is a great app. and I have been tinkering with it for a while, the ogg format isn't readily available for other operating systems, and converting the files into mpg results in huge file sizes. pyvnc2swf while more difficult to work with, has the benefits of using flash files. It took me a quite a while to get pyvnc2swf to do exactly what I wanted, and it isn't an easy thing for a new comer to figure out, but the resulting file is far more web friendly. recordmydesktop has the advantage of being able to capture 3D effects where the pyvnc2swf doesn't do so well. For showing off desktop stuff recordmydesktop is much better. For animated tutorials that anyone can view in any web browser pyvnc2swf is a better solution. |
