I was looking for a software like winzip in which I could span archive over many cds. A LUG member suggested I try Peazip (http://peazip.sourceforge.net/peazip.html)

I downloaded the GTK2 version from sourceforge. I also downloaded the documentation but found nothing mentioned on installation. So I extracted the files to a folder and was looking for a way to compile it. It was then that I realised that there was a file marked as peazip executable. So I double clicked on it and voila! it opened ! No installation, no compiling, no rpm, no kmph, and moreover, it opened in a flash. No bouncing animation of the suse mouse cursor as there was no time for that.

The interface is good. On opening the program you are faced with two choices, create an archive, and open an archive. Select what you would like to do and you are met with a winzip like interface. After you add the files you want to compress, the next step is to create the archive. The first button in the toolbar marked 7z is for that. Next to it there is a small gearwheel button where you can set spanning, compression type and other options. After you have satisfied yourself clik on the first button in the toolbar. The compression begins.

When you use peazip to unzip an archive, by default it unzips to the same folder. If you already have a file with the same name in the folder it will automatically rename the new file with an _1 at the end. However in the options in the gearwheel button you can set it to prompt you for the destination path if you so desire.

Hi, thank you for the interest in PeaZip and for your positive feedback!
I recently updated PeaZip to 1.3 version, adding create/browse/extract support to PAQ8F and PAQ8JD archive types and add/update and delete features for in-archive objects (for archive types supported through p7zip).
On SourceForge projec's page you can find Linux and Windows precompiled packages (as you seen, they are autocontained, portable applications you can unpack and run from where you prefer, i.e from network paths or USB sticks), Windos installer, doumentation package (.pdf) and sources.
The program is developed in Lazarus/FreePascal ( http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...group_id=89339 ), an Open Source IDE ported to many platforms.

PPL! I dont understand why such an excellent piece of software is so underadvertised! Furthermore, why it isnt in the repositories?!

why don't you suggest it to the repository maintainers ? we do not have any direct control over what goes into the repo's as we are not affiliated with the maintainers. have a word with them, can't hurt
