When I finally had a functional Linux system with a working network connection, one problem remained: I just couldn't get a resolution higher than 640x480 in X. I posted on numerous forums, installed drivers, edited config files, and got nowhere. I've heard of many other users having this problem with their systems using similar graphics cards (I'm using an Intel 845g). The problem is that the BIOS doesn't allocate the necessary amount of video memory to acheive something a little less humble than 640x480 under X. The solution?

This.

Download the apporpriate program and simply run it with the amount of video memory to allocate as a command line argument before starting X. Hope this helps someone.
