i was helping a new member to the forums with a question about disabling the logo the proprietary driver displays at boot and found a very interesting link to the gentoo wiki. it contains detailed information on all the options in the driver including, (wait for it (drum roll please)) how to make it support older, legacy, nvidia cards with the newer drivers.

Although wiki is for gentoo as the drivers are distro independent (to a point), i will post it here for your enjoyment. hopefully it will help someone.
