Please answer the 3 above questions. I really would like to know the answers to all of them, to increase my knowledge and to be better prepared for any future crash.[/b]
I don't know the answers.

Re: question-1/2, there is a /boot/grub directory with some (all ? ) necessary files, ... /etc/grub.conf is outside of that directory. as to what files are essential for grub, I don't know. My view is if and when I ever become a real advanced user, I might search for that, .... but playing with an OS internals is not "my thing". Instead I prefer to use applications. There are 3rd party apps that will help one with grub. Thats enough for me.

Re: question-3 - openSUSE-10.3 is broken in its "repair installed system" and its software that writes grub is buggy. Hence trying to give you a recovery sequence is meaningless in view of the bugs. In the bug report I raised, I did request Novell/SuSE write a "work around wiki" on this, but thus far I have seen nothing.

Then if it doesnt write @ all into the HD I've to have damaged myself the files in my desperation for saving my system, or after suffering the crash it damaged the boot files.[/b]
From what I have read on the other thread, your hard drive is dying, and that could be the source of your problems, and the reason why you had funny affects (in addition to all the bugs) when you tried to recover.

They've got an article up now! It's in the SDB database. They go through using the SuperGrub cd and then using YaST Boot Loader to restore the SUSE version after the system is able to boot again.
