Many people using Suse 10.1 will find it a little confusing setting up a second monitor system therefore in this How To I will describe how it can be achieved (note this how to only offers the basics please post any specific questions in the SuSe forum).

1. Move the mouse down to the K Menu

2. Click and on the K Menu icon to open the menu

3. Highlight System with the mouse
See the image above.

4. In the System drop down window (the tab that opens when highlighting the word System in the Kmenu) highlight the YaST (Control Centre) with the mouse and click.

5. A box titled "run as root" will open (see image below). Type in your root password (administrator password) into the password box. This is the password that you set in the "root password" part of your installation of Suse 10.1.

Do you need more information on what a root password is click this link http://www.bellevuelinux.org/root.html for an explanation.

6. Once this is done this window will open.

7. You will notice that I have already moved the mouse to Hardware and clicked. Once this is done you should see a screen that is similar to the one presented in the image in step number six.

8. Now move the mouse pointer to Graphics card and monitor and click. Look again at the image under number six and you will see it is there.

9. There will now be a short loading time after which this window will open.

10. Click on Activate Dual Head Mode box with your mouse pointer. As you can see this has already been clicked in the above image.

11. Now click Ok.

12. A dialogue box like this will appear. Please push Test. You should then get a test screen in your main screen. Note if the test fails then you should use the Ctrl+Alt+Backspace command mentioned in the dialogue box and then search http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de for how to configure your dual head mode settings.

13. Assuming you got a test screen you can now click Ok and then Save (if you feel sure everything is right). You will then get a dialogue box like the one below. ONLY CLICK YES if you are sure that everything is right.

14. Now plug in your second monitor. Restart SuSe 10.1 and with some luck your second monitor should show a clone (the same image as you see on your monitor) of your desktop.

I hope that this How To is useful. It is important to note that it is very basic and may not work for everyone if you have any problems please post your problem on http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de were people with more experience and knowledge than myself can assist you.

NINJA.

A very nice howto. I'd love to see it added to the wiki. Nice step by step, with screen shots. Very simple and easy to follow.

My OpenSuSe 10.2 screen doesn't show the "Activate Dual Head Mode box" as you shown in step 9.

I am using GeForce Ti4400.
