actually the whole thing with building a loop and mke2fsing it isn't needed, look at mke2fs' -n parameter. mke2fs -n /dev/partition-device shows the same info (and doesn't touch the data). ;-)

Thanks for the feedback. I checked out the option. What does that really buy you, though? You still have to dd to create the file. Is the point that you don't have to wait a few seconds for the filesystem to be created?

Let me know. I will consider changing the howto.
