I just did this but it got rid of Kontact. Where did it go? I ran YaST to see if I needed to install it, but the only results it returned for "Kontact" was some plugin for it.

No problem - the 3.4 rpm's use a slightly different naming scheme so its easy to lose track ;-)

Hummm, I am new to this and was wondering...

I have KDE 3.3.0 and have tried the steps outlined in this guide, but when I do somethings happen.

The first is that when I click update all in list, and if there is a newer version, not all the checkmarks turn to the lightening bolt. If I scroll down, some are and others are just check marks.

The other issue that I am a bit confused about is the conflicts that I get. There are four that are brought to my attention:
1) kdelibs 3 3.4.1-5
2) kdepim3 3.4.1-3
3) kdepim3 organizer 3.3.0-32.4
4) libraw 1394 1 2.0-1.pm.1

I was just interested in what these conflicts mean and if I go a head and either ignore them, or do not update them, will there be serious issues with the operation of the new KDE.

Thanks for all the help,

-TS-

Update if there is a newer version means it updates only if there is a never version. Just check mark means the version you have in your computer is the latest version.

If someone wants to upgrade to KDE 3.4.1 (SuSE 9.0, 9.1, 9.2, 9.3), go to:

http://www.kde.org/info/3.4.1.php

Choose the link according to your version (9.0, 9.1, etc) / architechture (Intel i586/AMD x86-64), choose a local mirror, and download all the rpms to a local directory (this is the method I did, and there may be an easy method; I tried to give the ftp site as an installation source in YaST, but it did not work for me).

Then,

Launch YaST
Select "Change Source of Installation"
Select "Add" or "Local Directory" from the "Add" pop-up
Browse and fill in the name of the local directory where you saved the KDE 3.4.1 RPMs. click on continue.
Click "Finish"

Now you'll be back in YaST's Control Center.

Select YaST Install and Remove Software.
Select "Package Groups" from the "Filter" pop-up.
Choose the "zzz all" group (last in the list)
From the Package menu select:
"All in this List -> Update if newer version available".
Select "Search" from the "Filter" pop-up.
Search for "cyrus-sasl"
From the list of packages found, select for installation
all except cyrus-sasl-devel.

Once the installation has completed, log out and back in.

Congratioulations you have just upgraded to KDE 3.4.1.

Again, this is how I upgraded my SuSE 9.2 (KDE 3.4) to KDE 3.4.1. If there are any mistakes in this procedure, please correct me.

Thanks,

Padmal

Hummmmm yes okay, but what about the conflicts with dependencies? I am looking for the best solution to this problem, since the last time I ignored them and went ahead with the upgrade and it screwed a lot of things up for me.

Probably the dependencies are related to the fact you're install the kdesdk apps etc - for development which you don't need..

Post the dependencies it says you need - besides doesn't it automatically offer to install them
