alphaomega,

Your how to login as root gives some great tips. Presumably not being able to login as root via the GUI is a recent thing?

However, my question is probably easily answered and it is regarding this:
Quote:
1. Ctrl-Alt-F1 and login to the text console as root[/b]
which does as it says, it takes me to the text console and I can login as root or user with appropriate password. But, how do I get back to the GUI? Typing 'exit' just returns me to the text login.

Thanks.

Yep - it seems a recent security update did it. A good thing. My /usr/lib directory breathes a sigh of relief.....

Ctrl-Alt-F1 2 3 4 5 6 even 8 I believe are available, yes ctrl alt f7 kicks you back to original login just as ctrl alt bkspc from X login kicks you back to g or kdm.

Ok , having to edit ignore 8 its outer darkness ..interesting...

Can we have a list of what all these ctrl-Alt-Functions do?

Of course I know F1 and F7 now!

Actually, the CTRL is only needed if you switch from the X-Server to a text console. Switching from a text console to other console (including the X-Server, which normally runs on console 7) you only need to press ALT+FX.

So e.g.:
CTRL+ALT+F1 (switch from X-Server to first console)
ALT+F7 (switch back to X-Server)
