There's another way too:
Start kwrite with root permissions "kdesu kwrite" and open this file: /opt/kde3/bin/startkde Within kwrite click on View > Show Line Numbers around line 256, find: test -n "$KDEWM" && KDEWM="--windowmanager $KDEWM" add the next line in order: kdeinit +knotify Save the file and reboot. Worked for me with latest arts rpm! |

The only problem with that way is that it wont survive a kdebase update (that overwrites startkde) but I'll add it!

I upgraded to KDE 3.4 last night. As expected the sound didn't work so I not only added the above lines to "startkde" but I compiled and reinstalled arts-1.4.0 from the .src files. The sounds still didn't work until I found that the player volume (Control Center --> Sound & Multimedia --> System Notifications --> Player Settings) has to be set to 100. Anything less will result in silence at least for the .ogg sound files. The wave files will play at lower player volumes. Have I done something wrong or is this just another quirk in aRts?

No - occassionally sound levels seem to be reset - to fix them - use (as root)
alsamixer then alsactl store |

I guess it was just that the volume levels for root had not been altered for root in my installation and were still 100% I am sorry I have followed your directins a1phaomega but it still seems all or nothing.Which level is it that I need to set back as I swear it seems all the appropriate levels are up.Curiously wave files play fine at any audio level. Thanx a bunch I have had Suse 9.2 for awhile and I am developing a love hate relationship. Love it when I dont change it - bang my head on keyboard then monitor then keyboard when I do sys updates

So its only ogg files as a user that have an issue? Perhaps permissions on those ogg files and/or reinstall the ogg libraries?

If you are Root, .ogg files will only play if the volume slider is set to 100% in control centre > system notifications > player settings : they will not play if set to less. If you are Root, .wav files will play if the volume is set to to any level in (control centre > system notifications > player settings. Chosse a .wav file instead of .ogg file and test. The exact same thing will occur with a User If you are User, .ogg files will only play if the volume slider is set to 100% in control centre > system notifications > player settings : they will not play if set to less. If you are User, .wav files will play if the volume is set to to any level in (control centre > system notifications > player settings. Chosse a .wav file instead of .ogg file and test. The wild goose chase that I alluded to was the file permissions/priviledges one you referred to I think, but I dont think that is probably it. It seemed that .ogg files played for Root only because the volume slider was set to Max and had never been moved unlike my regular User account where I had decreased the volume level. The ogg libraries question maybe more promising I will check it out later when I get bored of having things work half-a**ed and really want break my install. By the way I am using arts 1.4.0-8 that I rebuilt from rpm.src. Meanwhile the glass break.ogg set at 100% volume can keep every dog in my bad neighborhood barking. |

Reinstalling the ogg libraries did not help with this behaviour. <_<
