Hi All,
For those using OpenOffice there some nice tips to speed up the start-up. These settings should be ok for systems with more than 512MB of RAM. Open OpenOffice Writer and go into Tools > Options > Memory Undo : Number of steps -> set to 25 Graphics cache: Use for OpenOffice.org -> set to 128 Memory per object -> set to 20 Cache for inserted objects: Number of objects -> set to 30 You can tick the 'Enable Systray Starter' for a quicker startup but some report OOo instability when using this setting. I haven't experienced this myself but leave this un-ticked to keep resources free for other programs. Also: If you are not using Java in OpenOffice (for plugins or other) un-tick the option from the Java section in the Options. If you want to disable the splash screen you can do so by editing the file /usr/lib/ooo-2.0/program/sofficerc and setting Logo to 0. (The file is read-only by default and will need to be set to writable by root). If anyone has additional tips please include them too! Cheers, Wj |

Interesting - I will have to try this. I don't know if it's xgl causing this, but OO.o 2.3.x on openSUSE 10.3 (Lenovo T61 w/intel card) is very sluggish. Maybe this will help. Loads files fast, but manipulating .odp files is torture.

I have tried to enter the settings you suggested but i did not notice any speed improvement...

Curious, but did you also un-tick the ' use a java runtime environment' ? Java only is needed for certain plugins and parts of OpenOffice as far as a gathered. See here for more info: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/J..._OpenOffice.org As reference: opening OpenOffice Writer/Calc and documents in it is twice as on my system (going from 9~10 seconds to 3~4). If I enable the OpenOffice quickstarter it is almost instant. Mind you I don't have any documents over 30 pages and am no Office " power user". So I'm thinking to rethink this post... ![]() Wat settings have you applied? Cheers, Wj |

Also how quickly does OOo open a document for you? Just as reference. Cheers, Wj |

I'm on opensuse 10.3 with openoffice 2.3.1.2-3.1 .
I observe the same on x86_64 and on i586 . I mean that i haven't felt any noticeable improvements for the opening speed of openoffice. But i must say i haven't compared exactly the time for this difference. Opening a 1.2MB .doc document takes 9 seconds on a centrino/santarosa laptop (2GHz core 2 duo 64 bits) with 2GB ram and nvidia 8700 gpu, with the settings you suggested. And kernel and openoffice are 64bits. I would like to compare with the initial default settings but i don't remember what i was. |

I'd argue that in order to speed up OpenOffice, you should keep as much as possible in RAM, as it is 100 times faster than the HDD transfer rate (GB/s range vs. 10's of MB/s).
So make the number of steps undo 100, Let OOo use max RAM as well as per object, etc. and enable Quickstarter. |

I agree about the Quickstrarter and have enabled this myself too... Also been fiddling a bit more with the memory settings but haven't noticed much difference with greater values set. The undo : In my daily use I'm not very interested in 100 undo steps (never use more than 10 or so) so thats why I kept that value lower. But then again I am no power user and just do your regular enhanced typewriter stuff in Writer and Calc. It's a bit disappointing though to not have more positive feedback as I was hoping others would benefit with these settings... The disappointing thing being it seems not so.. ![]() Reminds me of the 'did you try to BS last week' in history of the world... ![]() Cheers, Wj |
