(4) Reboot (once again, not even sure this is necessary). The webcam should theoretically be working now. Test it with vlc or even Kopete.

I can't even find uvcvideo in my package manager, and I had a LOT of repositories installed.
In my case I would have had to install the http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/...pdate_standard/ repo, which is overkill if I can just install them manually (its annoying to add a repo and have unnecessary stuff in my package manger slowing down the cache refresh) Both approaches work, just pick one really. My method is just barebones and works with all kernels categorically. Definitley useful for when an new kernel is released and convenient RPM's are not available. Thanks foe the tip, though - if someone wants to install the necessary repositories and install that way, then we have even more ways of getting a web cam to work. |

You also might need to probe all modules (modprobe[/b)] before the harddisk setup scripts are called, from the recovery console or something. You can also try typing in "yast2" from a recovery console and unininstalling that module from there of course. http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-fai@rrz....e/msg03879.html Quote:

In my case, I just installed the uvcvideo package for my QC-9000 camera. It was on my 10.3 distro DVD and seems to be in the OSS package repo. Everything worked "out of the box", without rebooting even. But then again, I don't mess around with upgrading my kernel.
AFAIK, you don't need to install the 'bigsmp' versions if your kernel is 'default' and vice-versa. 'bigsmp' is just if you have 4gb of RAM or more. It's unfortunate that this isn't more clear in most places. It also isn't very clear, even on the wiki, what all the various USB camera bits there are and *why* you would need them. The latter is most important, because of the narrow focus of most of these USB modules, which support a limited range of cameras and kernels. I *think* the uvcvideo packages are trying to be more inclusive, but they only support V4L2, not V4L1 an earlier spec and thus might not work with some software. I need to investigate this more and write something up. Esp. as I'm supposed to be writing a video capture app for Linux... |
