I thought I wouldn't be able to make it unless I would have to take a radical decision such as using Fluxbox, but I'm able to reduce RAM usage to ≈ 90MiB and my computer is now pretty fast. I hope my tutorial helps some of you guys: Learn how to make openSUSE lighter and faster.

Thanks for the tip I am definetly going to try this. I have an Acer laptop with 700mb RAM, 120gb hard drive and a celeron M processor. It is freezing and running slow. I just installed open suse and i wanted it to wipe any existing partitions during installation. I told it to maximize disk usage. When i open up my disk usage folder there is 2 hard drives shown with a size of N/A then there is dev/sda2, dev/sda3, debuger, and a /dev/ . If open suse is the only OS on my machine, why is there so many partitions. What do you suggest i do?

I'd leave ntp and postfix alone, unless you really really need a few MB more. Being daemons they have a small footprint. NTP is useful to keep your computer time accurate and postfix delivers system messages.

Sometimes you should just throw old hardware like that away. I know, it's painful to do but no matter what you do it isn't going to get faster really.

It may not get faster, but it can still be useful, I have two old boxes running opensuse, one as a firewall, and the other as a print server.

Dang, my car is not going any faster, I must throw it away.

Dang, my microwave oven is not going any faster, I must throw it away.

Dang, my partner/spouse is not going any faster, I must throw him/her away.

And sometimes it is good to put old hardware to use, as servers, terminals, firewalls, and basic desktops, rather than simply throwing it away prematurely. As an engineer with experience in the POS (point of sale) industry, I know many retail outlets and accounting firms, for example, do not require the latest hardware to run their legacy apps. Speed is irrelevant, so long as OS sevices can be trimmed to suit the hardware and intended application. Many get sucked in by the marketing hype.
