Problem: The tap feature and the horizontal scroll feature make things a pain when surfing around. There is no way to turn the features off in any of the GUI configuration tools.

Solution: Turn the features off permanently by directly editing the conf file.

Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf make changes to the following options in the section "InputDevice", where the driver is "synaptics":
Option "MaxTapMove" "0"
Option "MaxTapTime" "0"
Option "HorizScrollDelta" "0"


Reboot
