As Harryc requested

This how to is intended for new SuSers and newbies including myself. This is open source and intended for wholesome consumption so every one is encourage and be feel free to edit and make an add-on provided you just leave the source name (conram) intact.

Okey lets start, Our target is to install some canon drivers not available natively in our SuSe Distro but can be found in ftp://download.canon.jp/pub/driver/bj/linux and can be installed using Yast.
These are :

Name in N.America-------------Name in Japan
pixma ip3000------------------ pixus ip3100
pixma ip4000-------------------pixus ip4100
pixma ip8500-------------------pixus ip8600
Canon i950----------------------pixus 950i

There are more drivers available but we will consume to much space so I will leave it for you to explore.

Requirements:
1.bjfilter-common-2.50-2.i386.rpm
2.bjfilter- [your model here] i386.rpm
3.compat-2004.4.2-3.i586.rpm

Reminders:
1.We have to note that those canon packages has dependency problem with libpng.so.2 and libxml.so.1. with newer SuSe versions starting from Suse 9.2 but can be resolve by installing the compat-2004.4.2-3.i586. rpm package from Suse 9.1 that we can obtain from ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/suse/i386/9.1/suse/i586/

Assuming that you already finish downloading all the requirements, let us start the installation by first installing the compat-2004.4.2-3.i586.rpm first and next the 2- bjfilter rpms.
Open Yast-hardware-printer and start configuring your printer.
In printer configuration, highlight your printer, click edit
In configuration, highlight your printer model, click edit
Under printer model highlight canon, choose your model or if you can't find the newly installed one
click Add PPD File to database-click local ppd file and browse to /usr/share/cups/model and select the
appropriate model and your finish.

Now you can test your printer if it does work. The tricky part in printing that I experienced was in printing an image using gimp. If your printer will not respond printing image in gimp. Here is what you will do. Okey
Lets fire-up Gimp open an image that you hate most (maybe an inlaws) your nosy neighbor
Click file-print-setup printer, under command you will notice this “lp -s -dip4000 -oraw” just erase
the -oraw and click okay and it should work now.

If you want to do some maintenance and other stuffs with your printer
in th console just fire-up bjcups [printer} ex: bjcups ip4000

Additional useful information with more good explanation that are missing in my writing can be find in this links.

My SuSE 10.0 is only 3 days old and using a variety of help from various sites, I managed to get my Canon i850 working for several applications, including Gimp and Firefox. My problem is opening the BJ window with the Maintenance tab.
# bjcups i850 javascript:emoticon('')opens a window called Canon Pixus 850i with only Main and Page Setup tabs. How can I get the ink low messages etc.?

I just found your post of 24 October and added bjfilter-common-2.50 (in hope; previously I had installed bjfiltercups-2.2 and bjfilterpixus850i-2.2 and these made things work); but with no change.

Any ideas please?. I am about to explore the .ppd file but don't know what I'm looking for.

For the optional ink monitor I think this is the one, please try
ftp://download.canon.jp/pub/driver/b...n-2.4-0.tar.gz

If you need the guide its in japanese on the same site
You might need a translator, this might help
http://www.systranbox.com/systran/box

Hope this will help

Thanks Conram,
I have tried bjfiltercups-2.4 with no sucess. It seemed to load a ppd for an i860 (not i850) resulting in no printing at all.

I found a manual on BJ filters for i250 on www.canon.com.au/drivers/download.aspx and
/products/printers/colour_bj_printers/i250_drivers.html. This showed all the ink monitoring details but with no indication of how to use this option.

Is it an OPTION and how do you start it? Is there anyone out there using a Canon i850 and getting the Maintenance tab on the Canon PIXUS 850i window. I must rest from this fruitless quest for a while, but I will try to translate the Japanese manual somehow - or has someone done that?

The i850 is such a great printer it's a shame not to use all the facilities.

Followingmy posting yesterday, some digging in the Japanese manual for the 850i led to a file list in English.

/usr/local/share/printuipixus850i.res has a collection of messages including those for the maintenance jobs.

# printuipixus850i in a terminal brings up the Canon Pixus850i window with the Maintenance tab !!

So far I cannot get any responce from selecting any operation and can find no options for printuipixus850i . They must exist but where now?

Conram, I knew there was a reason I asked you to document this, I just used it today . Can you add the link to the ink monitor again, it's broken., Many thanks.

Another question, (I really feel like a newbie asking this but...), theorhetically, how can I take an x86 rpm (if I do not have the source code or an source rpm) and get it to install on a 64 bit system? Is it possible?

Here's a practical example,

The bjfilter rpms here do not have source rpms or source code (except for the common rpm). How can I get them on SUSE 10-.0 64 bit? I've noticed that 10.0 64bit will let you install x86 rpm's, but drivers..I though they HAD to be 64 bit.

http://software.canon-europe.com/software/...1386.asp?model=

There is a source rpm called, cndrvcups-common-1.02-1.src.rpm
Maybe more digging might give more positive results and can be added info in this thread
Please try the links sometime it seems on and off.

Thanks Conram. Is that the only binary package I need for basic driver support? .i.e I installed (3) RPMs for 32 bit SUSE 10.0.
