Getting Beagle to start automatically and appear in the systray.

The following works for me. You may know an easier way.

Beagle in the systray

In the System --File System menu there is the Beagle search engine icon that launches Best. Either duplicate this entry or change the existing one so that the command to run beagle (best) is changed from
Code:
best --no-tray
to
Code:
best
When you now launch this icon a Beagle icon will appear in your systray (see picture below). You can click on this to launch the Best gui or press f12 to achieve the same result.

Why is this good?
Beagle wil stay in your systray between restarts of kde
Right clicking on the icon gives you a history of your searches as in the image below

Autostarting the Beagle Daemon
By default the beagle daemon does not start during the boot process which means manually starting the beagled after you've logged in. To automate the process I...

Went to the directory ./kde/Autostart
Right clicked inside the directory and made a new 'Link to Application'
In the general tab you can call it what you like but I called it BeagleDaemon.
In the Application tab enter 'beagled' in the command field and whatever you like in name and description fields. Click Ok when your done.
I also made an entry like this in the kde menu for those rare times when the daemon crashes

Log out and back into kde and the beagle icon should appear again in your systray. You'll see a small bouncing beagle icon next to your cursor for a while as the daemon starts.

I'm sure that someone clever will come up with a way to hack /opt/kde3/bin/startkde (snakedriver?) to do this second part, but for now this works for me.

Enjoy

Grant, the rest of your post is self explanatory, but I'm having a problem finding where you found this command structure or better put -- where to enter the changes as you suggest.

Finally, I ran Beagle overnight and it had 10,000 items indexed. If I turn off my machine does this Puppy, once started again, start this process all over again?

Use the KDE menu editor and change the Beagle Search (Best) entry. Change the Command field to just best.

Beagle will index new and changed items each time the daemon is started. It won't do a full database rebuild.

Grant,

I'll have to get back to you.

I just blew a bunch of things away.

Grant,

All is well -- did a few things to recover -- have the Dog in my Taskbar -- on Boot, but don't know if is really working.

I've still not duplicated the KDE Menu that I'd expected. Chiefly the Daemon.

Thanks for asking.
