A good tutorial for learning Vi can be found here http://www.infobound.com/vi.html what I like like about it is that you can download a file to practice using Vi.

Although there is a buit in Vi tutor, I found the tutor on this site pretty comfortable for taking the first Vi steps. Once you find your feet it's a really quick powerful editor.

There is also one installed with SuSE, just type vimtutor on the command line. I have just spent a couple of hours playing with it.

It takes a bit of getting used to, but it comes easier and is quite logical.
