The original instructions for Suse 9.0 are located here. Substitute all occurances of "9.0" with "9.1". The problem I encountered with apt4rpm was that several of the packages were not signed. To disable signature checking, edit the configuration file located at /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/gpg-checker.conf to set RPM::GPG-Check from true to false. This is probably not the most secure approach to upgrades, but perhaps another user will post a different workaround for the signature problem.

First thing I noticed that 'dist-upgrade' replaced xfree 4.3.99 breaking my 3-D enabled nvidia setup.

Oh, yeah. Maybe I forgot to mention that reading the apt documentation is a good idea. I think there are many howto's out there. Here is one. Dist-upgrade pays no attention, I think, to dependencies and is consequently not a terribly good idea. I have not yet switched from XFree86 to X.org so I can't comment on it, but I read that it works well. Start tweaking.

AFAIK, anything apt4rpm does involves dependency checking. The "kitchen sink" upgrade gets more people in trouble with apt than anything else. Do it in small chunks and it works better.

Thanks for the link to that ... I am usually a Debian user so having apt is really handy on this OS. Had some trouble with getting synaptic the way the page showed but once i got apt installed and got the list I managed to apt-get my way into synaptic. Now if only there was another site that I could add to my list

There are lots of APT repositories for SuSE out there, and google can help you out here a lot.

I dont know which one you are using, but I love

ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/9.1-i386/

Use their example sources.list file in the "examples" directory to set it up correctly. You can find everything there, from the base packages of SuSE 9.1 pro to the packman files. It's what I use when I need to look for a certain package (or 10).

I've never tried APT as Ive always found that YAST can do anything I need with rpms and does it safely.
