Hello,

My hard drive died and I am trying to decide what to do. Here are my options:
  1. Put Ubuntu Back On And Change Nothing. This Would Be The Easiest Route But I Think I Want A Change.
  2. Put Opensuse 10.3 On And Wait 27 More Days To Upgrade To 11. Seems like more trouble than it is worth.
  3. Put Mandriva On And Wait 27 More Days To Move To Opensuse To 11. Also Seems Like More Trouble Than It Is Worth, But I would at Least Get To Play Around With Another Distribution
  4. Put Windows Vista On... (Just kidding)
  5. Some Other Distribution.
So I have a blank hard drive and plenty of options; what would you do?

Thanks

Just because Suse 11 is coming out in about a month doesn't mean you have to upgrade to it. Don't know why so many people think they need to upgrade all the time.

Wait and install opensuse 11 when it comes out, then decide you don't like it, take it out and reinstall Ubuntu?

HaHaHa...oops.

Ducks.

Actually I've never tried Ubuntu, but intend to get around to it someday, but no seriously. You said you have an extra hard drive, not an extra computer so I don't know. You could just wait if you really want to try OpenSuse 11 and save yourself the work...?

The above was just a joke in case anybody missed it. I'm using 10.3 and have hardly even looked at other distros since I started actually using Linux with 10.0 because it's so good.

This IS a SuSE forum, hence from my perspective the SuSE recommendation is to install 10.3, and then in 2 to 3 months (ie 1 to 2 months AFTER 11.0 is out, and various bugs fixed) only then upgrade to 11.0.

If you don't like the idea of installing twice in 3 months, then run sidux, kanotix, or knoppix off of a live cd/dvd, until you are ready to install openSUSE-11.0.

As noted, this IS a SuSE forum, and thats a SuSE recommendation.

What does everyone have against installing and/or upgrading? The best thing about inux is the installation, right?

I agree, this is what I'd do. Initially 11 will have bugs, whereas 10.3 runs well....

I highly recommend checking out different distributions if you haven't already. Something like OpenSolaris seems pretty intriguing--or testing out the Release Candidate of openSUSE 11 coming out in a couple days.

Just a couple of suggestions...

I say try PC-BSD, it's very cute, and don't forget to come back for the mandatory portion of SuSE 11.
