I have some friends wanting to use Myspace Instant Messenger, and I have it installed on a WinXP system. Now I'm trying to figure out how to connect to the service from an openSuSE system. I tried installing with Wine, and it appears to have installed for the most part. When it tries to log in, it develops an unknown error and shuts down.
I'm wondering if folks around these boards might have either a way to get it working correctly, or an equivalent program to use. I've used Kopete and Gaim in the past, but it appears neither of them connect to the Myspace IM client, specifically. Suggestions? |

A quick search shows that pidgin claims to support Myspace IM
http://www.nirmaltv.com/2008/04/19/18-mult...-mac-and-linux/ It's been a while since gaim was renamed pidgin so perhaps it's time to get a more recent release? |

Pidgin 2.2.1 has an option for Myspace IM. I have not tested it, but I see it in the list.

Apparently, the version of Pidgin is 2.1.1 on the openSuSE downloads. I've downloaded the source to get the latest version- one that claims to have Myspace IM support. When I tried to compile it, I said I was missing some dependencies, so I'll have to take care of some files and try again later.
It appears that they support RHEL.rpm files, but nothing specific to openSuSE. -edit OK, I found and installed the glib-devel files it asked for, but now it's telling me: Code:
You must have the GTK+ 2.0 development headers installed to compile Pidgin. |

Copperlion,
You can venture into the build service and get a one-click install for just about any Pidgin version you want - even the 2.4 version (Which I was not happy with due to the entry text box constraint "feature." I have 2.4 on one machine.) I usually get my Pidgin and libpurple packages from one of the GNOME repositories already in the Community Repositories list. I check off both packages, click accept, and YaST does everything. There is no need to compile anything unless you just enjoy the practice/frustration. You will probably be more successful with using the repositories and YaST instead of compiling. Good luck. |

I wandered into the build service and managed to find the one-click install for Pidgin just after my last post. I have version 2.4.1 running right now, and it does Myspace IM, Google IM, and Yahoo IM- the three I have friends trying to get me to use- all pretty well.
It took me a little bit to get my bearings on some of the features, but things seem to be going well so far. ![]() |

CopperLion,
I was glad to read you got everything all set up and functioning properly. Yes, there are a few slight changes in 2.4.1, but you will get adjusted to them quickly. Whenever you need an application, it is much easier to check with the openSUSE build services and the one-clicks. That was more fun than compiling, eh? Enjoy! |
