Any recommendations for a decent sidebar app? Something that might have widgets and a launcher panel, perhaps?

I'm brand new to Linux / KDE and just looking for some utilities to help make the desktop a bit more friendly. Thanks!

What are you looking for the sidebar to do when you say widgets? Are you looking for something that will display system resources?

Yeah, and maybe a clock, a weather applet, etc. Also able to have a panel with shortcuts. There were a few apps like that for windows before Vista hit the scene with it's own and I'm just curious if there's anything like that for KDE.

This sounds pretty much like Superkaramba. Install it, launch it and look for a module that gives you the opportunity to view and download different widgets for system-monitoring, weather-forecasts, rss-feeds, changing the cats litter-box and so on.

You could also go for gkrellm, gdesklets and conky.

I tried SuperKaramba and had some issues with some of the applets displaying correctly. Finally I found Screenlets and they seem to do the trick with some tweaking. I'll check out the others you mentioned as well.

Thanks!

Not sure about this, but you might have to enable composite to make it work right.

I also recommend GKrellm, which is a little easier on the cpu than some Superkaramba-themes.
