Hey guys , I'm relatively new to linux. As in , I know some basics but never really forced myself to use it and learn it like I am now.
I'm wanting to replace my laptop OS ( windows XP ) with OpenSuse10.3 but I will need my windows for some business related apps. So I thought at first that XEN provided with the OS would be the best choice , but it seems that I'm seeing alot of recommendations for VMware Server (Free? ) Anyone tried them both or had more success with one over the other ? (((( Edit ))))) I should have searched first , found a great thread about Virtual box. Thanks |

I tried Xen when I first moved to openSuse, and didn't have much luck. That being said, I didn't put much effort in, either.
I moved on to VMPlayer, which is VMWare for free. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles as VMServer or Workstation, but it runs XP just fine, and I can do my taxes... |

i use virtualbox on suse10.3; does the job really well, although for some reason, the windows XP VM i am running doesn't want to see my internal network
still, im sure i can figure that out and hopefully be playing Trackmania Nations again in no time at all

I'm using VMware server, which is free, and I have had no problems. It runs xp great and in the documentation it spells out how to set up the networking to share files between the host and guest OS, and it was easy enough for me to do

I also use Virtual Box. There are two versions, the free open source version, and also the "price-free" proprietary version. I use the latter.
I have WinXP running as a Virtual Box client on my Athlon-2800 (2GBytes of RAM) which has openSUSE-10.3 as the "server". I configured openSUSE-10's Virtual Box server to allocate 512MBytes of RAM to the WinXP Virtual Box client. The applications I have seen run successfully on Virtual Box include Microsoft Access, Adobe Acrobat Pro, plus some proprietary real time web based monitoring software that the office has me run (requires .net architecture). WinXP does run slower in a Virtual Box session. But not unbearably slow. For office applications (such as acrobat or access) it runs fine. |

I ditto VirtualBox. I use it for MSO, and for IE for the various sites I'm required to use at work that just won't co-operate with non-IE browsers. It's decently integrated, you can pass files from linux to Windows etc., and it actually performs better than my corporate laptop, though I'm using a fairly new system with decent horsepower.
Just my 2c... Cheers, KV |
