I used the stickied thread and found a really useful and easy to set up bit of kit; it's called "aixgen". shame that i have a dynamic IP as i can not use it to send emails to hotmail

(not the software's fault mind you, it's hotmail themselves grr)

Mail from dynamic address ranges are blocked by many mail servers because they are associated with home machines which tend to be easy to infect with viruses. Your ISP should have provided you with a mail relay which you can use to send your mail to the outside world.

They did but then if I change my ISP I have to go around telling everyone my new email address; this way I host it with my own domain Yes, I know, an ISP change is a rare occurance but not only that, but I'd rather control my own email then give it to Virgin media who are currently selling every page I browse to using Phorm (http://www.badphorm.co.uk).

No, they are different things. Your email address has nothing to do with the relayhost. A relayhost is just a store and forward server for outgoing email. It doesn't affect what addresses you put in the email. If you change ISPs you just change the relayhost and nobody notices anything, unless they look at the Received: header lines.
