Personally I don't think it matters. If it were me I wouldn't install X and just run it headless CLI that way I don't waste resources on something I won't really use.

Both take up unnecessary amounts of RAM and disk space if all you want is a file server (I concur with 69)

dito..

As for managing a headless server remotely you could make use of connecting to your server via ssh with the -X switch (redirect all X output to your own desktop) (eg. ssh -X <username@<ip address server>) or have a look at this option if you are running a Windows desktop : http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?showtopic=45759

Cheers,
Wj

edit: If it where me I'd install a DE (KDE, GNOME or other) but choose to boot up to runlevel 3. Always handy to have your DE ready if you ever need it for some reason or other (what's 2 to 3 GB now a days?).
Also if you don't have the DE and apps installed there is not much fun in using the ssh -X as there are no apps installed to launch...

+1 for no GUI.

If you want a GUI for when you need to work on the server, then install either one. Your choice. Just set it up so that it does not auto-start. This way, it runs at the command line, but you can fire up the GUI when you need it. Best of both worlds.

Yes. You can set openSUSE up to load with command line only. This is where you want it to run. Then, when you want, you can load the GUI of your choice. It doesn't get any better than that.

This is not just an openSUSE thing. This is Linux. You choose what you want it to be.

I keep hearing users say that I like XXX distro because it will allow the user to do the Watusi. Then I hear others say they like YYY distro because it will do the Hoochie Coo. Why would one want to limit themselves to shaking their leg one way? The leg is not limited, and why should you be?

login as root
Code:
service smb start
as long as the /etc/samba/smb.conf file is correct then you're done!

you can access yast2 from the command line as well in case you're missing any packages.

you can also control the firewall startup method (auto/manual etc) through the command-line yast2
