Wich opensuse software do I need for my old computer with Intel pentium 333mhz and 128 mb RAM?
I do not need desktop, a command line is good enough. I know that i need 32 bit version and a CD/compact disk without KDE or GNOME. What do i need more to know to build a server for files, websites ,ftp and printserver? Teun from Tovar.nl |

Firstly more RAM, like another 128MB, would be good, you may have to enable swap beforehand to install even CLI in 128MB.
There's no problem using one of the KDE or GNOME CDs. In fact if you have a DVD, that's even better, that will reduce the downloading. You just don't install the desktop package, there is a choice offered during the install. After that, it's up to you what packages you want, OpenSUSE is also an excellent server distro due to the wide range of package. There is a ncurses version of YaST you can run from a terminal. For the apps you want, you would need these packages: samba, apache (maybe php5), vsftpd, cups. |

128MB may get you by with a non-graphic install, but I agree with ken_yap, you'll probably want more memory. openSUSE is a great general-purpose OS, but it's not really optimized for lower-memory environments the way that something like DSL or Puppy is. You can get by with 128MB if you make it through the installer, but you may be more comfortable with some extra space.
Sadly, due to the legacy spaghetti mess of openSUSE dependencies, you'll wind up pulling in Xorg and Gnome packages even with a minimal non-GUI install. Just ignore them, they'll take up a tiny bit of disk space but won't impact your resource requirements since you won't be running a GUI. Cheers, KV |
