I want to take some old computers, make them into something like a cluster, and have it act as one computer with on/off functionality from the control computer controlling all of them over the network. At the the same time I want to use monitors attached to the work nodes as part of one continuous desktop extending from the control machine.

The names of the software packages I could use would be most helpful.

For the multi monitor across different machines I have found that Xdmx is supposed to take care of this. Now I'm searching for network boot software, and info on how to get a computer to get packages off another without being connected to the internet.

A home network, whether wired or wireless, should give you file transfer capability without any need for the internet.

Yes, I know. I certainly wouldn't be attempting to create a system this complicated if I didn't know the basics of networking. Right now I'm just using two machines to prove that I can set it up, and I usually can't get wireless working on the laptop, so when connected to the second machine I don't want to bother with it. Also I don't intend to have an actual set up for years because of money, and hoping more 64 bit processor computers become available in whole sale lots from eBay.

Is there a way to do a network install without internet, it should really speed things up when/if I ever get more computers for this.

(I found an article on configuring yast to update the nodes http://searchenterpriselinux.techtar...156727,00.html)

You can do an install from a NFS exported ISO image I believe. You'd have to kick it off with a PXE boot or minimal CD boot.
