Real sysadmins don't run GUIs on the console, to save memory.

But if you have to because you need to work using a GUI, it doesn't really matter whether you use KDE or GNOME.

An alternative is to run GUI apps like YaST on the server via ssh -X displaying to a workstation's local display.

And don't forget that openSUSE 10.2 is just out at the door.

I don't recommend using a GUI for a true server for the reasons listed above unless you are also using this server as a workstation.

I am running a "headless" home server in my home but it doesn't run SuSE. It runs a linux distribution called Clarkconnect which is meant as a server linux OS. It doesn't come with Gnome or KDE or any desktop environment; instead the server is configured by a web interface on client computers (much like a home router would be) - hence the term headless. Of course you can also use ssh (secure shell). It comes with all the server software you need (webserver, mailserver, fileserver, ftp server, content filter, firewall, print server yada yada yada...). The community edition is also free. The only draw back is that it doesn't have a large community .

You don't need all 5 disks. You just need to select only the package you need. Most people tend to install just a non-GUI server which uses the 1st and 2nd disk iirc.
