Under openSuSE 10.3 I've been viewing Quicktime trailers on Apple's site for several months now. Recently more and more of the trailers won't come up -- I just get a "Get the latest QuickTime" message. I've tried updating mplayer and mplayer plugin, but that's not helped. Has Apple built a new test that doesn't allow mplayer to play QuickTime trailers now? If so, is there a fix or workaround?

Thanks for any information.

I encountered the same earlier this week. I have not had a chance yet to look for work arounds.

Thanks for the response. I guess I'll just have to be patient. It must be something new Apple has added to the site.

You may not have to wait long. There is an update to the libquicktime rpm on the Packman site, which I think addresses this problem. Previous I had libquicktime-1.0.1-1.pm.4 installed, and I updated that to libquicktime1-1.0.2-100.pm.1, which appears to address the problem. Update and let me know how it works:

Still the same. I don't think it has anything to do with the actual QuickTime file or mplayer's ability to play it -- I think Apple is polling your computer to see if you have QuickTime (or a specific version of QuickTime) and, if you don't, it reports the "Get the lastest QuickTime" message. It's like it's blocking you from the file. For example, if you want, try clicking on the "Mummy 3" trailer. Unless you choose HD, you'll get the message (above). If you choose HD, it'll give the three resolution choices as normal and play fine. I think if I could access to the trailer everything would work. If I'm right, the only way to work around this problem would be finding a way to report back whatever Apple wants to see so you could access the file.

Can you link me to one that doesn't work?

I just tried some that didn't work for me before, and they work now.

Further to this, I just tested a very large % of the videos on the Apple Movie Trailer site - I can not find one (not one) that does not work with Firefox and mplayerplug-in, after I updated the libquicktime rpm.

Again, if you find one, please post the URL here. I think it important we obtain an accurate assessment as to what problem you are experiencing. While I know there are sites that do the sort of "application" poll that you are suggesting, I don't think it is happening in this case, ... or if it is happing, my firefox is setup to not be affected.

Here's one:
http://www.apple.com/trailers/universal/th...ror/medium.html

This is the medium "Mummy 3" trailer, but I get the same message with the large or small. I can come up with more examples, but one should be be enough.

If it works for you, then obviously there's something different in my computer's configuration. Thanks for all your trouble.

Yes, I can play this trailer in openSUSE, but not from the link you provide.

If you go back to the Apple trailer site for that trailer:
http://www.apple.com/trailers/universal/th...edragonemperor/
you will see you have options for the trailer:
* small
* medium
* large
* iphone
* high def

The High Def works.

As a further note, there do appear to be some trailers which do not offer High Def as an option, whose Low/Med/High videos will not stream.

I flashed up winXP on my Virtual Box and tried to play those Low/Med/High videos, and I obtained the same error (as in Linux) that I needed to update Quick Time. So in the case of WinXP I did update Quick Time, and then I was able to stream the videos. I captured one on WinXP using "Orbit", copied it to a Linux directory, and confirmed the .mov video is playable with mplayer, xine, vlc,... etc ...

So where this problem occurs, this does provide the appearance of some sort of check for Quicktime software ( ? ) by the apple site, and if the software is not on the client end, their server will not stream it. But thats speculation, and I do not know it to be true.
