I can't seem to play any cds, I open them up with amarok and it scans all the tracks and then I see a small notice at the bottom that says "cannot open cd". I am assuming it has to do with how the disc is encoded or something since I can play mp3's I transfered from my windows computer just fine, I do have the option to rip the cd in K3b but I don't want to do that, I have downloaded many codecs to try and fix my problem but It won't work, I have dvd support and just about everything else though, I just can't play cd's and wma in some players so far.

some more info, I decided to insert disc and then open amarok, go to engage and select cd as media, I get this error.
Unknown error. If you have a cd in the drive try running cdparanoia -vsQ as yourself (not root). Do you see a track list? If not, make sure you have permission to access the CD device. If you are using SCSI emulation (possible if you have an IDE CD writer) then make sure you check that you have read and write permissions on the generic SCSI device, which is probably /dev/sg0, /dev/sg1, etc.. If it still does not work, try typing audiocd:/?device=/dev/sg0 (or similar) to tell kio_audiocd which device your CD-ROM is. so I went in to the terminal and tried this, I really don't know what I am doing though. admin@linux-059w:~> cdparanoia -vsQ cdparanoia III release 9.8 (March 23, 2001) © 2001 Monty <monty@xiph.org> and Xiphophorus Report bugs to paranoia@xiph.orghttp://www.xiph.org/paranoia/ Checking /dev/cdrom for cdrom... I had problems playing a cd too. Found it easier to install the package kde multimedia extras (which is not installed as part of the default) . This gives you a (conventional) CD player to use to play CDs. Much more straightforward |

I searched for k multimedia and found a program called the K player that works just fine, only thing I don't like is that it doesn't contain a library I can rip to like amarok or banshee, thats the main reason I wanted to use those two instead, but this is a fairly good player and I can use it till I figure out what to do, if ever.

the proper name of the package (which is included on the standard opensuse installation dvd) is kdemultimedia3-extra. This will give you a simple CD player. If you want to rip the tracks use CD Ripper |

ok, I found the cd ripper, I already had it installed just didn't know it.

But when I choose play cd it sits there for 3-4 mins saying reading playlist and when it finally is ready it is skipping in/out constantly. I checked gnome system monitor but the cpu usage is ok. CD's play fine in Rhythmbox. I'm running openSUSE 10.3 under gnome.Any suggestions on what's going on here... thanx.... |

Thats exactly what happened to me, skipping of tracks, I believe it has to do with the read/write permissions for certain players because the cd drive works, the cd works, the cd works with some players, so the problem of not playing has to be with the players themselves, I still haven't figured it out yet though, I would just use what player works for playing, use a cd ripping program to rip, most of those read the disc, and use the other players to simply manage the library of riped tracks, since they can read them once on the computer.
