I have an iPhone and I downloaded a couple of .m4p files using the iTunes WiFi store. That being said, I don't have Windows or OSX, and since there's no iTunes (or alternative) for Linux, I can only play the songs on my iPhone. Is there any kind of add-on for amarok or xine or anything else that will allow me to play these files using Linux?

Note to moderators: I am *not* trying to break any copyright protection or remove the DRM from these files. I only want to know if there's a way to play them.

I don't have any mp4 files, but I noted PACPL-Convert has the capability to convert files to mp4 format. So I created an mp4 a few minutes ago from a nominal .mp3 file, and played the .mp4 file with VLC, then mplayer, and then xine. It did not play under my xmms nor amarok (nor did I try to configure xmms nor amarok to play it - one would need to investigate if that is possible).

I don't know what plugins are needed for xine, mplayer nor vlc.

I do note I have libtunepimp5-mp4-0.5.3-100.pm.7 and also libmp4v2-1.5.0.1-10.pm.0 and perl-MP4-Info-1.12-0.pm.1 installed. Plus I have Packman versions of libxine1, vlc, and mplayer. Plus I have many other packages for various audio and video codecs.

I know nothing about DRM, and as to how it might affect playback of .mp4 files if DRM was/is in use.

oldcpu, thanks for your response. I can play (and/or convert) mp4 files, but these iTunes songs are m4p, not mp4. They use a different type of encryption, and there are a couple of perl modules that are supposed to be able to deal with them, but I know next to nothing about perl except basic syntax so I'm up the creek without a paddle on that one.... :blink:

Another case of oldcpu senility. Apologies, I misread your post.

Try searching on google for "m4p linux". There are some interesting/useful hits.

I'm not a perl user, but my understanding is if setup properly, its usage can be transparent to the user.

I forgot to address this comment with some links .... I don't know much about perl either,... but there are lots of perl guides on the web ... perhaps one of them has the guidance you need, such as:

* http://www.deluxnetwork.com/linux/guides/perl.php
* http://gentoo-wiki.com/A_Practical_Perl_Guide

M4p is Apple's AAC DRM protected codec. I spent a good long time trying to find a way around it. As I understand no one has been able to crack the DRM and it's illegal to do so anyway. I think they are using a form of AES encryption.
