Please post the version of opensuse that you are using. I use 10.2 and avi's play fine using, xine, vlc, kaffeine.
Also have you installed kaffeine from the installation dvd or from packman

Kaffeine uses the xine engine to play video files. So the best test you can do, is to try to play a video file with xine. If that does not work, then its likely the problem is with the xine engine, and not with kaffeine.

Note that the version of xine that comes with openSUSE is basically crippled for most .avi files. That is because .avi is a wrapper format for many different codecs, where in the most case the codecs are proprietary. openSUSE is "open" in that Novell/SuSE-GmbH have endeavered to include only opensource free software (free as in the free software foundation definition of free) and hence proprietary codecs are not included.

If you wish to have your kaffeine (and your xine) play proprietary codecs, it is best you install the Packman packaged rpm version of libxine:
libxine1 - http://packman.links2linux.org/package/xine-lib
xine-ui - http://packman.links2linux.org/package/xine-ui
w32codec-all - http://packman.links2linux.org/package/win32-codecs
xvid - http://packman.links2linux.org/package/xvid

Note - only grab the versions that are specific to your openSUSE version.

Note that the easiest way to install these, if using openSUSE-10.3, is to add Packman to your YaST repositories:
http://opensuse-community.org/Repositories/10.3
and install from YaST. Its that simple! This takes minutes for a average user to do, ... although typically it can stump newbies for months to weeks. A basic assumption here is your PC has internet access from openSUSE.

The information you needed to set up this was all in the link you were provided earlier, but I suspect you simply did not understand the information you were given earlier:
http://opensuse-community.org/Restricted_Formats

And finally, if you have problems, please don't just say "it didn't work". Please provide more information. Its next to impossible to tell what you tried/attempted, if you can not be more specific.

Good luck!
