Hi,

is there a way to convert .mpeg and .wmv videos to .avi so I can see them also with my TV-DVDplayer? (DVD-Divx player)

Thanks in advance

The avi format is a "wrapper" where the video/audio internal could be using different codecs. Can you advise what codecs your TV-DVDplayer needs (ie just Divx?).

You could try the program divxenc
http://divxenc.sourceforge.net/
It runs from an xterm/konsole, without a fancy gui, but one only needs to input the input file name, output file name, and accept the default values and the program works great, creating high quality avi files with the divx format.

Another more general (GUI) based program is avidemux.

Uh, yeah. I forgot to tell about the codecs. Yes, I think it works only with Divx. Thanks for the info, I'll give it a try.

you can use mencoder or ffmpeg from command line.

If you google those (or read their documentation) you'll probably find what you are looking for.
